A Beckenham school is shipping a minivan and its entire contents to a school in Malawi.

St. Christopher’s The Hall School, in Bromley Road, has been collecting books and textbooks to send to Mpemba school in south east Africa.

For the past two terms the whole school has slowly been filling their minibus, which will be shipped to the school in the coming weeks.

A tracking device in the school’s mascot, Christopher, will allow the school to track the bus’ progress.Year Five teacher and charity co-ordinator Alix Purton will then fund her own trip with her husband, Ian, in July.

She will help distribute the textbooks and work with the teachers on how to use the new resources.

Filling the van last Friday (27 February), Mrs Purton said: “Some of the children have donated their pocket money, or done bake sales.

“They were really excited about the project, but shocked at how little it costs to feed a child for a year.

“We normally collect for one term but we’ve been doing this for two terms.

“I’ve never been to Malawi, it’s really important to go and see how this will make a difference.”

The school has been working on the project with charity Hope4Malawi.
