It’s that time of year
In April the ground in rural Malawi is swamped with wicker mats covered with kernels of maize drying in the sun. Maize is the stable diet of both Malawians in the South of the country, the harvest of which is very vulnerable to the weather. Most families try to grow enough maize to feed their families for a year. From April to September Maize is around £7 a bag but rises steeply to over £12 a bag, which becomes crippling for many families in the ‘hunger’ season.
