Bringing the Easter story to life for primary-aged children

In recent weeks, our team in Malawi has had the privilege of visiting Hope4Malawi's partner primary schools to deliver our Easter Experience programme.

This interactive workshop invites children to step into the Easter story in a hands-on and memorable way. One by one, they open a series of colourful eggs, each containing a small object — a donkey, coins, a cup, praying hands, and more.

As each item is revealed, the children help piece together the events leading up to Easter, exploring key moments from Jesus’ journey to the cross.

Curiosity and excitement fill the room as the story unfolds. But the most powerful moment comes at the very end.

The final egg is opened… and it’s empty.

Discovering more about the Easter story

This surprising moment opens the heart of the Easter message. The children hear the words spoken at the empty tomb: “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen.”

It’s here that the story shifts from something simply historical to something deeply meaningful and real.

Through discussion and reflection, the children are encouraged to consider what the Easter story means — not just then, but now.

That Jesus’ death and resurrection are not just a story we remember once a year, but one that Christians believe changes everything: bringing freedom, hope, a relationship with God, and the promise of eternal life.

We’ve been encouraged to see how engaged the children have been — asking thoughtful questions, sharing their ideas, and reflecting on how the story might impact their own lives.

It’s a joy to create space for these moments in schools, helping young people explore the meaning of Easter in a way that is both accessible and thought-provoking.
