Samson, a sponsored student, shares his story as he completes the Youth Development Programme and looks ahead to studying dentistry at university.

I am the third-born child in a family of six children. I have two older brothers who both left school early for different reasons. My eldest brother left school after he became a father, even though he was still studying. After completing his exams, he returned home to marry the girl, and when the results came out, he had not achieved the grades needed to continue his education. He decided to focus on supporting his family instead.

My second brother left school in Standard 7. He told our parents that he no longer wanted to continue with his education, despite their encouragement. I am the only one in my family who has continued successfully through school. I also have a younger brother and sister, both of whom are still in primary school.

My primary school years were very difficult because of financial challenges, but I remained focused and worked hard until I completed my Primary School Leaving Certificate examinations in Standard 8. I have a stepfather who has not been able to support my education or take part in my academic journey. Despite this, I stayed determined to continue learning.

The difference that student sponsorship has made

My secondary school education became much easier because of the sincere support I received through sponsorship from Hope4Malawi. Without this support, I would not have reached where I am today. I am deeply grateful, and I pray that God continues to bless everyone who has helped me along the way.

Since I was young, I have watched my father struggle with serious dental problems. Many times, he travelled to the hospital seeking treatment, but often without success. Seeing his pain inspired my dream of becoming a dentist. From primary school onwards, dentistry has been the career I have wanted to pursue.

I am passionate about dentistry because I want to help people improve their health, confidence and quality of life. It combines science, healthcare and practical skills in a way that can make a real difference to people every day.

Dentistry is more than just a career, it's about helping others

In our communities, many people ignore dental problems until the pain becomes severe due to to lack of access to proper care. I want to help change this by improving access to oral healthcare and educating people about the importance of dental health.

My interest in dentistry comes from both my desire to care for others and my understanding of how important oral health is to overall wellbeing. To me, becoming a dentist is more than simply having a career — it is a calling to serve others.

I understand that studying dentistry requires discipline, patience and many years of hard work, and I am prepared for that challenge. I am committed to working hard, remaining focused and dedicating myself fully to both the academic and practical training required.

Alongside dentistry, I am also interested in developing computer skills, which I see as an additional area of knowledge that could support my future career. However, my main ambition has always been to become a dentist, and I am determined to achieve this goal through any opportunity available to me.
