In rural Blantyre in Southern Malawi, vulnerable children who excel in Hope4Malawi’s partner primary schools have great potential to succeed. Sadly, many miss out on secondary education, as families cannot afford the school fees and other costs.

Hope4Malawi’s student sponsorship programme offers a lifeline by providing the financial support necessary for eligible students to continue studying at secondary schools and universities.

Sponsoring a student is rewarding and can cement a lifetime bond. Sponsors and students enjoy exchanging letters, and some sponsors visit their students in Malawi.

Recently, the team in Malawi welcomed Steve and Fiona Miles, who had a lovely time reuniting with their previously sponsored student, Rachel. Fiona says: “It was so emotional meeting Rachel again. We met her once before with her daughter, who was incredibly shy but was happier to smile and say hello this time! Her baby was cute, too.

“Although Rachel isn’t working, we were delighted to see she was happy. It was quite overwhelming when she gave us mangoes from the tree on her land, when she had so little herself.”

Steve and Fiona now sponsor Gift, Chisomo and Patience at Hope Secondary school.

Ella Dene first decided to sponsor a student at Hope Secondary School when working with the Malawi team at the Hope Skills Centre farm. It was a delight for Ella to meet Peter, who is in Form 1 at Hope Secondary School, and to visit him in his home.

Sponsorship makes a huge difference to the students’ lives. Not only do the children have the opportunity to attend secondary school, which they otherwise wouldn’t be able to do, but they also enjoy and benefit from exchanging letters with their sponsors.
