In Malawi, the brightest primary school students are selected to continue their education at District or National boarding Secondary schools, some of the best schools in the country. These places go to the country’s top students.
Secondary education has to be paid for in Malawi. This means many children who pass the Primary School Leaving Certificate miss out because of the cost of secondary education. Vulnerable families cannot afford the fees, transport and other expenses.
One of these district schools is Lunzu Secondary School, a boarding school located north of Blantyre.
Hope4Malawi currently sponsors 17 students at Lunzu, and only one girl. While girls face bigger barriers to education, local primary education is improving, and we hope to see more young women at district schools.

Andrew, Hope4Development’s Youth Development Programme manager and student mentor, visits the students regularly to provide support and check on progress.
As a mentor, Andrew’s visits are an opportunity to meet the students one-on-one and as a group to discuss issues, encourage one another, and share devotions. All the students meet with Andrew to look at the bible and pray together.
Andrew also provides the students with their allowances, registers them for exams, and provides essential resources like exercise books, calculators, and textbooks.
Once a term, the students exchange letters with their sponsors. This brings great joy as they love to be encouraged and feel connected to their sponsors despite the distance.
We’re always delighted to welcome our Lunzu students back to Hope Skills Centre during the holidays for extra encouragement and educational support.

Can you help a child in Malawi?
Thanks to the kind support of our partners, sponsors, fundraisers and volunteers, Hope4Malawi's Youth Development programmes, school building, resourcing projects, and student sponsorships continue to provide life-changing opportunities for children growing up in rural Blantyre.
