What keeps us going: Reflections on our work in Malawi

Earlier this year, someone asked me a question I hear quite often: “Why do you keep going to Malawi? There seem to be so many challenges. How do you keep going?” It’s an honest question—and the answer isn’t just one thing, but several.

First and foremost, it’s love that compels us. In 2 Corinthians 5:14, we read that “the love of Christ compels us,” and that really is at the heart of everything we do. We are motivated by a deep sense of calling to serve, to care, and to keep showing up.

We also hold onto the vision found in Isaiah 61 and quoted by Jesus in Luke 4:16-21 as part of announcing his mission: bringing good news to the poor, binding up the broken-hearted, and setting the captive free. That vision feels incredibly real when we’re on the ground in Malawi.

Yes, there are challenges—many of them. But in the midst of those challenges, the work is deeply rewarding. One of the greatest privileges is seeing young people begin to shift their mindset and worldview. As they embrace new attitudes towards work and responsibility, you can see them starting to overcome the barriers in front of them. That kind of transformation is powerful.

The resilience of the people we work with is also remarkable. Many have very little, yet they make the most of what they do have. There’s a strength and perseverance that is both humbling and inspiring—and it often rubs off on those of us who visit.

At the same time, we’re aware of the complexities. Generations without access to education can mean people continue in patterns that don’t always serve them well. There has also been a long reliance on outside aid, which can unintentionally create dependency. That’s why we try, wherever possible, not to simply give handouts, but to equip and empower.

As the saying goes, it’s not about giving someone a fish, but teaching them how to fish for themselves. Of course, there are times—particularly in cases of illness or disability—where direct support is needed, and we respond with compassion.

Another thing I’ve learned is how powerful gratitude can be. We are naturally drawn to help those who are thankful, and we see that spirit so often, both in Malawi and among our supporters.

The biggest reasons why we keep going

And that brings me to one of the biggest reasons we keep going: you. Having people who stand with us—praying, giving, encouraging—makes all the difference. I’m constantly amazed when I speak to supporters and hear how much you know about what’s happening, and how faithfully you’ve been praying into the situations we’ve shared.

We truly wouldn’t be doing this without you. Thank you for your partnership—for your faith, your generosity, and your consistency. Whether you support us through prayer, finances, or practical resources, it all matters more than you know.

Please do keep talking to us, praying for us, and supporting us in any way you can.

We are so grateful for each and every one of you.

Can you help a child in Malawi?
